The Citadelle is undoubtedly the most famous historical monument of Haiti; of the Caribbean and even of the American continent. Today, it is classified “World Heritage”.
With an area of about 1 ha and located 900 m above sea level, this fortress was built by King Henri Christophe at the time to defend the territory of the North against a possible return of the French in the Island.
Begun in 1805 to end with the death of King Henri Christophe in 1820. By its site and its irreproachable military architecture the Citadel is classified universal heritage by UNESCO.
<< The value of the History of the Citadel and without worry was consecrated in 1982 by their inscription on the World Heritage of Humanity >>.
Often cited as the eighth wonder of the world, erected under the orders of King Christophe.
It is classified World Heritage by its monumentality and by the spirit of sacrifice which animated such a realization.
Across the world, there are only 165 sites, and among these 165 world sites of outstanding universal value are “La Citadelle, Sans Souci, Ramiers” all grouped into a group called “National Historical and Cultural Park”.
From Milot to the Citadelle you have to walk about 7 km if you want to admire the scenery and enjoy the good air otherwise you have to rent the transport service and be accompanied by a guide who knows the history of Sans Souci and the Citadel better than Christophe himself.
